It is all possible!

The Garden Berry – Designing Careers Around People

The Garden Berry opened its freshly painted doors in September 2018, following a 2+ year approval, renovation and rebranding process of an existing trading café. The new look café, restaurant & bar includes a foodie’s delight menu, spacious outdoor seating and liquor license for the enjoyment of guests.

The project was a tremendous success – doubling trade almost overnight.

Customers are drawn to the unique heritage building in the heart of Berry, the relaxed outdoor garden dining and beautiful seasonal menu celebrating local producers. The relaxed feel, events and local art exhibitions have contributed to its success as a destination venue, complete with all-weather and pet friendly options.

The café employees around 30 staff in a variety of roles from front of house to chefs, baristas and business support.

“Often young people start by cleaning and clearing tables and before long they are learning to serve customers, make coffee or obtain their RSA. There are so many career progression opportunities, and we like to design roles around people. If we see someone with an eye for photos and design, they are supported to gather content for our social media accounts, or if they have a flair for business administration, we might train them in invoicing.” Said Owner, Alison Hayes-Chessell.

“Having worked in hospitality previously, I’m very passionate about overhauling the negative perceptions of the industry, treating staff with respect, giving them a voice, valuing their contributions, offering flexibility and creating opportunities for the future. Often people see hospitality work as ‘transitional’ when in fact it can offer an incredibly rewarding career that can take you anywhere in the world.”

“You get to create amazing experiences for people, what is more rewarding than that?”

“Success does not have to mean going to uni and aspiring to an office job- that is just one version of success. For other people, it’s using their skills to bring a smile to someone’s face that day and when we find those people, we look for ways to upskill them.” Added Alison.
