It is all possible!

Regional Career Builder: Jack, Property & Commercial Lawyer/ Director Carter Ferguson Solicitors. Graduate Opportunities Have Come a Long Way and So Has Jack

Jack grew up in the Shoalhaven and has always considered it ‘home’ but when he graduated from his law degree from the University of Wollongong it was at a time when law graduate positions were scarce.

“Everyone wanted to hire someone with at least 3 years’ experience so getting that initial foot in the door meant moving to Canberra for me, I was never really interested in going to Sydney,” he noted.

After about 2 years in Canberra, working 5 days a week and travelling back to the South Coast on weekends, Jack pursued an opportunity closer to home in Wollongong.

Living in Culburra Beach, he travelled to Wollongong over the next 6 years, working his way up to Senior Associate level before getting the chance to be based in Nowra.

About 18 months ago, Jack was approached by the owner of Carter Ferguson Solicitors, an Illawarra and South Coast law firm who have 6 local offices spanning from Fairy Meadow in the North to Nowra in the South, to become a part owner and director.

He said it was the right opportunity at the right time:

“It was an obvious next step in my career progression but also offered the family friendly lifestyle my wife and I have always wanted.”

“I’m ambitious but family is a huge priority and one that I don’t compromise.”

“I currently coach my kids’ soccer team, and this will likely be the only year they ever have the chance to play in the same team so it’s potentially a once in a lifetime opportunity,” he added.

Jack is also currently studying a Master of Laws (Applied Law), with a double major in Property Law/Business Law & Transactions through the College of Law. His aim is to one day become an Accredited Specialist in one and/or both of these areas of the law, as recognised by the Law Society of NSW, which will make him one of only very few south of Wollongong, with Shoalhaven locals historically having to be referred to Wollongong or Sydney for specialist advice in these areas.

Giving back to the community he loves has been a huge focus for Jack – previously volunteering as Vice President of the committee of Shoalcoast Community Legal Centre, (who provide free legal advice to vulnerable members of the Shoalhaven and surrounding communities), volunteering on the board of Bendigo Community Bank Nowra & District, participating in charity golf days, and being involved with various surf and sporting clubs.

Jack says he is grateful to be in a position now where he can give others a go:

“I remember how difficult it was to secure that first opportunity locally even with my mum being in the legal industry, so I’m always eager to have a chat to local graduates or young solicitors and see whether they align with our values.”

“We have a great team and culture here at Carter Ferguson, we’re local, approachable and community minded,” he added.

Community connection is an important focus for Carter Ferguson Solicitors, and you can often find them at Shoalhaven Business Chamber/Kiama Chamber of Commerce events, Shoalhaven Professional Business Association networking breakfasts and Illawarra Connection Dinners.
