Shaping the future in Community and Health Services on the South Coast

“What excites me about this industry is the chance for people to align their careers with organisations that are truly leading the way. Whether you’re just starting out or stepping into leadership yourself, there are endless opportunities here on the South Coast to grow, learn, and make a real difference.”

Renee Knight, CEO of CareSouth

The Community and Health Services sector on the NSW South Coast is thriving, offering purpose-driven careers with industry-leading organisations. From major employers like the $438 million redevelopment of Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital to smaller family-led practices, the region is home to workplaces that balance professional growth with lifestyle, fulfillment, and community impact.

Industry Leaders Creating Opportunities

Across the South Coast, strong leaders are shaping the future of care while creating workplaces where people flourish.

Renee Knight, CEO of CareSouth, describes her role as one of empowerment:

“I can’t do what some of our amazing staff can, but I know I can support them in the work they do,” added Renee.

Renee also sees the South Coast as a place brimming with professional opportunity:

“What excites me about this industry is the chance for people to align their careers with organisations that are truly leading the way. Whether you’re just starting out or stepping into leadership yourself, there are endless opportunities here on the South Coast to grow, learn, and make a real difference.”

For Alice Lans, CEO of Noah’s Inclusion Service, leadership means mentoring the next generation of professionals:

“I did a stint teaching Clinical Education and I love taking on that mentoring role, seeing people grow into new pathways.”

Her leadership style has made a lasting impression on her team. Kate, an Occupational Therapist at Noah’s, recalls:

“When I first started, the CEO, Alice, took the time to meet me for a coffee. I was so surprised. I’d never expected a CEO to do that. I feel personally valued here every day.”

Claire Carson, Owner of South Coast Therapy and Support Group, brings both academic and personal experience into her leadership approach:

“I completed my Masters in Health Industry Management, which I initially thought would be for leadership within the hospital system but I’m applying it to my own clinic.”

Her team highlight the supportive environment Claire and her partner Nathan have created:

“I’ve been welcomed, supported, and given space to grow. It’s a workplace where everyone helps each other, and Claire and Nathan have been incredibly generous with resources and time to settle in,” said Klara, Occupational Therapist.

Purpose and Fulfillment at the Heart of the Industry

A strong sense of purpose is woven through the sector. Alice explains:

“We believe that we have a great value proposition to be able to provide a supportive and vibrant workplace in a beautiful region, with meaningful work supporting the children and families in our community.”

Temika, a Team Leader of Support Workers at CareSouth, outlines how important it is for her as a leader to look after her team:

“I’m not going to lie, it can be really awesome helping these children, but it can also be really draining as there are a lot of emotions involved. I check in and debrief with my team constantly. Being part of an organisation like CareSouth means we’ve got that support structure around us too.”

For Temika, the heart of the work is about helping children build the skills and confidence they’ll carry into adulthood.

“We’re acutely aware that once they turn 18, our support ends… So we strive to build positive connections and independent living skills – that’s 90% of our job.”

It’s this balance of personal fulfillment and professional support that makes the South Coast’s community and health services sector such a rewarding place to grow a career.

Diverse Career Pathways

The industry offers clear career progression and diverse opportunities. As Alice notes:

“We’ve supported many people to go from a Certificate 3 to a Diploma or pursue other studies and training.”

For Claire, continued learning is central to her leadership and practice:

“I’ve had great mentors and subscribe to some really valuable tools for practitioners who are running clinics. Ultimately, I’d also like to complete my PhD.”

At CareSouth, Temika’s journey reflects the many pathways into the sector. After leaving the Army and spending 13 years as a foster carer, she began as a Support Worker in residential care before stepping into leadership.

“I started in residential care and decided to become a Support Worker… After this, I decided I’d love to step into the Team Leader role. When I stepped into the role I was like, ‘this is for me’.”

Whether entering the workforce, reskilling, or advancing into leadership, the South Coast is rich with opportunities to grow a long-term career in community and health services.
