Shoalhaven Occupational Therapy has embarked on an exciting new initiative called Sense Rugby, designed to allow children of all abilities to experience the fun of sport in a supportive, sensory-friendly environment.
Program lead Jill Scott, an Occupational Therapist at Shoalhaven Occupational Therapy, explained how the idea originated. ” During The emerging leaders program introduced by Claire and Nathan, Hayden and I had the opportunity to develop new skills and explore different therapeutic options for our clients,” she said. Together with Allied Health Assistant Hayden Windell, Jill explored Sense Rugby, a concept she first heard about during her university days.
Before launching the program, Jill and Hayden had to present a comprehensive business proposal. Hayden was particularly enthusiastic about the program’s potential. “It’s also going to be accessible to kids with anxiety and other diagnoses who may not feel comfortable standing in line for mainstream sports. If a kid wants to watch a plane overhead or a butterfly, that’s absolutely encouraged,” he shared.
Jill expressed her passion for the program, saying, “Combining my love for sport and occupational therapy is very exciting. I’ve been with Shoalhaven Occupational Therapy for 2.5 years, and this project has given me new responsibilities and a chance to learn more in my career.”
The launch event on Saturday was a success, with participants joining at their own pace. The event began with a warm-up, followed by fun activities with tackle pads and a modified game of rugby, ending with a joyful huddle.
Looking ahead, Shoalhaven Occupational Therapy plans to offer three sessions every Tuesday afternoon for children aged four and up. They are also considering a session for young adults, which has generated considerable excitement. “I’d love everyone to be able to participate,” Jill said enthusiastically.
Sense Rugby promises to be a transformative program, opening the world of sports to those who might otherwise feel excluded. With its inclusive approach, Shoalhaven Occupational Therapy is set to make a significant impact on the community.
