The South Coast region is facing hidden workforce gaps, particularly in laboratory technician skills. Currently, many individuals in this field rely on on-the-job training without formal assessment or qualifications to validate their expertise. Recognising this gap, Nowchem in Nowra has joined forces with nine other businesses to tackle the issue by partnering with TAFE Illawarra and the Education Department.
Building on the success of the Aeroskills Training Pathway, this collaboration has led to the creation of the LabReady Initiative, a hands-on training program run through Nowra TAFE (early 2025). The program aims to equip participants with foundational laboratory skills while showcasing the diverse career opportunities available in the advanced manufacturing and science sectors.
LabReady is a free, five-day training course designed to provide practical experience and a basic understanding of laboratory operations. Participants will explore laboratory safety, engage in real-world lab work, and acquire essential skills that open doors to the industry. The program also includes industry tours, offering a firsthand look at innovation in action, as well as sessions to help attendees update their resumes for lab-focused job opportunities.
Upon completing the program, participants will have the skills and knowledge to pursue further qualifications, including a Certificate III in Laboratory Skills Traineeship with a variety of employers locally.
John Lamont from Nowchem is enthusiastic about the potential this initiative holds for the local community.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for a wide range of people – from school leavers to individuals relocating to the area or parents returning to the workforce and looking for a new career path,” John said.
The career possibilities for graduates are extensive, spanning industries such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, skincare manufacturing, and hospital pathology. Those who continue their Laboratory Skills Traineeship at Nowchem may even progress to studying Chemistry at the University of Wollongong, unlocking further career prospects right here on the South Coast.
“I’m thrilled to see this program creating pathways for people to realise the incredible career opportunities available in regional areas,” John added. “I hope it sparks a renewed passion for science and inspires more people to pursue these rewarding careers in the Shoalhaven.”
