Exploring Rewarding Occupational Therapy Careers on the South Coast: Meet the OTs Making a Difference

We want to celebrate the diverse and fulfilling roles that Occupational Therapists (OTs) play in the South Coast region. With a growing demand for OTs and numerous career opportunities available locally, the NSW South Coast is an ideal place to start or advance a career that truly makes a difference. Let’s take a closer look at how our local OTs are shaping lives and communities on the South Coast.

From the UK to Shoalhaven: Clare’s Inspiring OT Journey

Clare Ellerington’s career in Occupational Therapy began across the world in the UK, but it was a role with the Cerebral Palsy Alliance (CPA) in Australia that led her to Shoalhaven. Over the years, she has become an integral part of the local community, with her family actively participating in causes like the Shoalhaven Giants AFL Club and the Girl Guides.

Clare’s experience spans both non-profit and government sectors, but she found her professional home at CareSouth, where she is now a Senior Clinician. The organisation’s family-friendly approach allowed her to balance work and family life, accommodating her schedule when she could only work one day a week to support her young children.

At CareSouth, Clare’s career has flourished with extensive training in areas such as child trauma and DIR Floortime, a developmental approach for children with autism. Now, she mentors junior clinicians and supports clients in developing communication skills, motor skills, and emotional regulation. Her work goes beyond traditional settings – she helped design a purpose-built facility that includes innovative equipment like a linear yoga swing to calm the nervous system. Whether using musical instruments, weight-bearing activities, or even cuddles from Woody the therapy dog, Clare’s adaptive approach reflects the creativity and versatility that define Occupational Therapy. Carly’s Career Transition from Teaching to OT

After two decades as a dedicated Primary School Teacher, Carly sought a change that would still allow her to make a difference in children’s lives. She had moved to the South Coast 15 years ago, settling in Long Beach near Batemans Bay, and decided to pursue Occupational Therapy to bring her experience with children into a new field.

“I was looking for a fresh challenge where I could still support children’s growth,” Carly explains. The transition wasn’t easy, but she found fulfilment in this new role, helping children and families from a different perspective. “It was a big change, but it was worth it. I’m settled here, and I’m not going anywhere.” Read her full story here

A Day in the Life of a Graduate OT: Meet Jill

Jill’s journey into Occupational Therapy began with her love for creative problem-solving. Unlike her sister, who became a physiotherapist to “fix” problems directly, Jill was drawn to finding innovative ways to help people adapt and overcome challenges during their recovery. “I love finding out what’s important to people and helping them continue doing those things,” she says. “Small changes can make a big difference.”
After completing her studies at Charles Sturt University, Jill joined Shoalhaven Occupational Therapy (SOT). The coastal lifestyle, with its natural beauty and proximity to family, made the South Coast the perfect place for her. Her workdays are never the same – one morning, she might help an 8-year-old improve handwriting skills, and by the afternoon, assist an 80-year-old with their powered wheelchair.

Jill also serves as the team’s Wellbeing Officer, organising activities like yoga, walks, and social events to foster a supportive culture. “We’ve gone bowling and played putt-putt – everyone’s family is welcome, and there’s always cake involved,” she adds with a smile. The collaborative environment at SOT, where Allied Health Assistants (AHAs) support therapists with tasks like client preparation and administration, allows Jill to focus on delivering impactful care.
