Aerospace Training Services (a QinetiQ Company) has partnered with South Coast based High School’s through the EVET system to deliver revolutionary vocational educational and training opportunities to students in Year 10, 11 and 12 – leading to exciting career opportunities in the defence industry.
Students work towards a Certificate II in Aeroskills course and gain hands on experience while contributing units towards their HSC.
Bomaderry High School Careers/Transition Adviser Holly Pastor says training alongside Royal Australian Navy technical trainees increases student awareness of the career pathways available:
“Young people are exposed to the boundless opportunities in this dynamic sector.”
“Working within the advanced manufacturing centre at QinetiQ Air Affairs in South Nowra allows students to experience the thriving Defence industry in the Shoalhaven and helps young people to understand the careers available locally.”
QinetiQ Air Affairs Aerospace Training Manager Haley Byrne says this place-based initiative promotes the growth and success of the next generation of aerospace leaders:
“We need so many more people in Aviation in Nowra.”
“While many of our personnel are ex-Navy, school leavers are a major growth area and we’ve seen several successfully go on to gain apprenticeships with local defence contractors.”
“Young women in particular are doing well, their attention to detail and ability to comprehend technical information is extraordinary.”
“I was only the 3rd female technician at my squadron during my time in the navy so it’s great to see the number of women and people from diverse backgrounds that we have coming through.” added Haley.
The HSC Aeroskills program is conducted over three school terms. Students attend one full day each week.
From recent Year 11 students graduating from the Aeroskills EVET program, two have been accepted into the Royal Australian Navy as technicians, and a third graduate is currently at HMAS Cerberus recruit school.
“Students with good reading and writing skills, a great attitude and a passion for the industry are invited to apply.”
