It is all possible!

A Career Pathway With Many Steps – From Tradesman to IT Technician

Growing up on the Georges River, many well spent hours were had in the water and riding motorbikes through the bush with his mates.

When Gavin left school, an apprenticeship with his friend’s dad as a fitter machinist, landed Gav his first career step. While he enjoyed it, after becoming qualified and still in his early 20’s he pursued city life for some fun.

Landing a ‘glassy’ job in one of his favourite clubs, Gav quickly moved to bar staff serving customers and enjoying the tunes until the early hours of the morning. With a passion for all things technical, he got to know the DJ’s playing each night and spent hours of break time working the dance floor lighting system.

It was through his hospitality career that he met his now wife Anna, who was managing the bar. With Anna making her second career change from working nights in hospitality to working days in recruitment, Gav switched to a day management position, but found he missed the evening vibe.

With a newfound interest in audio-visual (AV) technology, the time was right to pursue his 3rd career move. Landing an AV technician entry level role with a large corporate events company, who offered TAFE accredited training, Gavin went on to become a qualified AV-Technician, supporting major corporate events at Sydney’s high-end hotels.

His next career move, and most definitely his favourite, was to become a dad.

Wishing the best life for their family, Gavin and Anna made the move to the South Coast in 2009, securing their first home, just minutes from the pristine waters of Jervis Bay.

The 4 years of being a stay-at-home dad, his 4th career move, Gav would never change.

When the girls started school, he felt a pull back to his technical career. Starting part time at the Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre as an AV Tech, weekend and night events were not conducive to family life, so when Brad at IT Basecamp was looking for a new Level 1 Helpdesk Technician, whilst Gav wasn’t perhaps the most obvious choice, his background as a fitter turner, experience with customers in hospitality and corporate events and his knowledge as an AV technician, coupled with his methodical thinking, systematic approach, critical thinking and problem-solving ability turned out to be the perfect fit.

“Brad took a gamble on me, but he could see the transferrable skills I had, said Gav.

“I get a kick out of solving complex problems for people and I’ve worked hard to upskill myself.”

“I’ve had product specific training but I will often read up on things after hours or draw on the knowledge we have in the team as well,” he added.

Gav loves the flexibility of the role:

“I often get out and about visiting clients, replacing equipment, managing breakdowns and deploying new solutions.”

“Other times I can work from home or be a 7-minute drive to the office.

“We live and work in a place that people normally holiday. I now get to share my love of motorbikes and water sports with my kids on the South Coast, whilst still having a career that ticks all the boxes” added Gav.

Now 5 years into his 5th career move, a level 2 technician and one of the team leaders at IT Basecamp, Gav loves the challenges the of IT and the variety and complexity of clients he works with across NSW.

IT Basecamp are currently recruiting for Level 1 and Level 2 Technicians. If you’re looking for a challenging career with a coastal life, check out their open careers.
