It is all possible!

Attracting the Health Professionals of the Future

Health is already an important contributor to the South Coast Economy injecting an estimated $1 billion and employing 16% of the 70,000 workers in the region. In Nowra, the medical ‘precinct’ around the hospital is enshrined in local planning laws and is set to grow with a $432 million expansion of the existing Shoalhaven Hospital now underway. The investment is essentially a doubling in capacity, which will demand a workforce to match in the not-too-distant future.

Further south in Batemans Bay, there is a greenfield site earmarked for a brand-new Eurobodalla District Hospital that will replace the current Batemans Bay and Moruya hospitals to the tune of $260 million. The new world-class facility will include the latest technology available for patient-centred care and become an important training/research institute. This, coupled with the University of Wollongong’s Graduate School of Medicine at the Shoalhaven Campus presents some exciting opportunities for medicine in the bush.

The flip side of opportunity, however, is challenge and while an abundance of career prospects and better health outcomes for regional patients is an exciting prospect, attracting and retaining skilled professionals is going to require a considered approach. Now more than ever we need a collaborative approach to clearly communicate the opportunities that exist and to develop a value proposition for our region that is easy to understand and appealing.
